Education plays a vital role in modern society, yet we rarely take the opportunity to address the crisis of “education for all.” It saddens me to think that there are brilliant individuals around the world ready to share their talents, but who lack the opportunity to do so. Fortunately, we have encountered a phenomenal 16-year-old Brazilian leader, Julia Agostinho Mathes, who has inspired multitudes with her works in democratizing education and alleviating the distress of low-income students who have the desire to study outside of Brazil with many open opportunities.
Julia’s Project and Inspiration Behind the Project
Julia founded the Madelena Caramuru Educational Program, with its aims on democratizing education, encouraging sustainable practices and showing the most diverse opportunities for low-income students who want to study outside of Brazil. In the meantime, they are undergoing a restructuring process to serve as many young people as possible. The impact that was moulded in her progress and project are immensely impeccable, with the following actions of donating electronic devices to indigenous communities for educational purposes, giving lectures to regional schools to encourage students to seek international opportunities and having a community of students who would like to study abroad, journalistic writing workshops for aspiring journalism leaders, implemented with charity competitions for opinion pieces.
As mentioned by Julia herself, the time that she encountered social work, she admits that she felt a sense of uncertainty until she discovered a fortune cookie, which to her meant “destiny” and her outlook that social work was the right direction. Her passion and drive comes from a famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi, “Be the change you wish to see in the world”.
Decisive Moments in Julia’s Life, Leading to Focus on Social Projects
The story of Julia’s social service journey began in 2022, in ninth grade. She attended a lecture about studying abroad and volunteering, where the speaker from her lecture showcased that it was possible to be young and stand up for crucial causes that really brings an impact to other people’s lives. Eventually, as time went on, she combined her passion for education and sustainability to attempt to mobilize more students about social work focused on education, which led to the establishment of Madelena Caramuru.
Stepping Stone and Vision for the Project
Stated by Julia, the idea for the Madalena Caramuru Educational Program came from a Cicero about the democratisation of education in the country, seeing few people who had much knowledge, and many with little. Since Julia was raised by a family of educators, even outside the classroom, she has always valued the education she received and wanted to use it to help others. Back to the time of her starting point, the first step into this project was their partnership with an NGO about youth empowerment, thus they started by bringing the voice of youth about educational issues, always strengthening their position in decisions made by governments.
The Impact From The Project on Julia and Her Community
In the making of this project, Julia stepped into the realisation that she always had a fear of asking others for help. In her perspective, she always had to display her work finished and perfect. However, when she became the president of the project, this made her realize that she needed assistance. In her mind, full of wonders and curiosity, she thought that if she really wanted to make a difference, she had to take off her heroine shield and let others help her. This led to the result of her professional and personal development having a tremendous effect. Today, now on, she sees a change in the youth in her community. With students creating clubs on educational issues and fighting for their voice in the midst of large institutions, makes her the most proud.
Activities and Programs Offered Through Her Project
In the Madalena Caramuru Educational Program, the vast amount of activities and programmes offered through her project includes donations of electronic devices to indigenous communities for educational purposes, giving lectures at regional schools to encourage students to search for international opportunities, having a community of students who would like to study outside of Brazil, journalistic writing workshops, with charity competitions for opinion pieces. In the meantime, they are still in the process of taking the initiative to create a bill that would provide quotas in public and private universities for seniors, encouraging them to continue studying, even after retirement.
Her Greatest Achievement to Date with this Project
The biggest achievement that they have so far was expanding towards different regions of Brazil as well as being invited to participate in the G20 South Africa 2025 educational committee.
Upcoming Plans with Her Project and Their Agenda on How to Expand to More Communities
In terms of Madalena Caramuru’s future plans, they are currently concentrating on new partnerships with companies and governments. This is to suit their vision on increasing the donation of computers to indigenous communities through partnerships with other companies, burst the bubble with campaigns on educational dilemmas plus also emphasise on the approval of their bill on quotas for the elderly,
Her Motivation and Continuing the Exhilarating Pathway in the Field of Social Work
Julia states that the element that keeps her motivated to continue with social work is the results and the support it offers. In her point of view, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing that your work has brought such significance of people’s lives and that it can become much greater over time.

La educación desempeña un papel fundamental en la sociedad moderna, pero rara vez nos detenemos a abordar la crisis de la “educación para todos”. Me entristece pensar que hay personas brillantes en todo el mundo, listas para compartir sus talentos, pero que no tienen la oportunidad de hacerlo. Afortunadamente, hemos conocido a una líder brasileña fenomenal de 16 años, Julia Agostinho Mathes, quien ha inspirado a multitudes con su trabajo en la democratización de la educación y en aliviar la difícil situación de estudiantes de bajos recursos que desean estudiar fuera de Brasil, donde existen muchas oportunidades abiertas.
El Proyecto de Julia y la Inspiración Detrás del Proyecto
Julia fundó el Programa Educativo Madalena Caramuru, cuyo objetivo es democratizar la educación, fomentar prácticas sostenibles y mostrar las más diversas oportunidades a estudiantes de bajos recursos que quieren estudiar fuera de Brasil. Actualmente, el proyecto está en proceso de reestructuración para poder servir a la mayor cantidad de jóvenes posible. El impacto que ha logrado es inmensamente admirable, incluyendo acciones como la donación de dispositivos electrónicos a comunidades indígenas con fines educativos, charlas en escuelas regionales para motivar a los estudiantes a buscar oportunidades internacionales, la creación de una comunidad de jóvenes interesados en estudiar en el extranjero, talleres de escritura periodística para líderes en formación, y competencias benéficas de artículos de opinión.
Como lo mencionó la propia Julia, al principio de su contacto con el trabajo social sentía incertidumbre, hasta que encontró una galleta de la fortuna que para ella significó "destino", y que la hizo ver que el trabajo social era el camino correcto. Su pasión y motivación provienen de una famosa frase de Mahatma Gandhi: “Sé el cambio que quieres ver en el mundo”.
Momentos Decisivos en la Vida de Julia que la Llevaron a Enfocarse en Proyectos Sociales
La historia de servicio social de Julia comenzó en 2022, cuando estaba en noveno grado. Asistió a una charla sobre estudios en el extranjero y voluntariado, en la que la ponente mostró que era posible ser joven y luchar por causas cruciales que realmente impactan la vida de otras personas. Con el tiempo, combinó su pasión por la educación y la sostenibilidad para movilizar a más estudiantes a involucrarse en el trabajo social centrado en la educación, lo que dio lugar a la creación del programa Madalena Caramuru.
El Punto de Partida y la Visión del Proyecto
Según Julia, la idea del Programa Educativo Madalena Caramuru surgió de un discurso de Cicerón sobre la democratización de la educación en el país, al observar que había pocas personas con mucho conocimiento y muchas con poco. Criada en una familia de educadores, incluso fuera del aula, siempre valoró la educación que recibió y quiso usarla para ayudar a otros. Su primer paso fue asociarse con una ONG enfocada en el empoderamiento juvenil, y así comenzaron a alzar la voz de los jóvenes sobre temas educativos, fortaleciendo su presencia en decisiones gubernamentales.
El Impacto del Proyecto en Julia y su Comunidad
Durante el desarrollo del proyecto, Julia se dio cuenta de que siempre había tenido miedo de pedir ayuda. Pensaba que debía presentar su trabajo terminado y perfecto. Sin embargo, al convertirse en presidenta del proyecto, entendió que necesitaba apoyo. Con una mente llena de curiosidad, pensó que si realmente quería marcar la diferencia, debía quitarse la armadura de heroína y dejar que otros la ayudaran. Esto generó un gran desarrollo personal y profesional en ella. Hoy en día, ve un cambio en la juventud de su comunidad: estudiantes que crean clubes sobre temas educativos y luchan por su voz dentro de grandes instituciones, lo cual la llena de orgullo.
Actividades y Programas que Ofrece su Proyecto
El Programa Educativo Madalena Caramuru ofrece una gran variedad de actividades y programas, incluyendo donación de dispositivos electrónicos a comunidades indígenas con fines educativos, charlas en escuelas regionales para motivar a estudiantes a buscar oportunidades internacionales, la formación de una comunidad de jóvenes que desean estudiar fuera de Brasil, talleres de escritura periodística y competencias benéficas de artículos de opinión. Además, están en proceso de presentar una propuesta de ley para establecer cuotas en universidades públicas y privadas para personas mayores, fomentando así que sigan estudiando incluso después de jubilarse.
Su Mayor Logro Hasta la Fecha con Este Proyecto
El mayor logro que han tenido hasta ahora ha sido expandirse a diferentes regiones de Brasil, además de haber sido invitados a participar en el comité educativo del G20 Sudáfrica 2025.
Próximos Planes del Proyecto y su Agenda para Expandirse a Más Comunidades
En cuanto a los planes futuros de Madalena Caramuru, actualmente se están enfocando en nuevas alianzas con empresas y gobiernos. Esto responde a su visión de aumentar la donación de computadoras a comunidades indígenas mediante alianzas estratégicas, crear campañas sobre problemáticas educativas y enfatizar la aprobación de su propuesta de ley sobre cuotas para personas mayores.
Su Motivación y el Camino que la Impulsa a Seguir en el Trabajo Social
Julia afirma que lo que la mantiene motivada a seguir en el trabajo social son los resultados y el apoyo que se genera. En su opinión, no hay nada más gratificante que ver cómo tu trabajo tiene un impacto significativo en la vida de las personas y cómo puede crecer aún más con el tiempo.
