Francisco Javier Silva and Liz Daniela González, both 16 years old and residents of Managua, founded the Pathway 21 club with the mission of offering comprehensive support to families and children with Down syndrome and other different abilities. What initially emerged as a personal idea and a shared dream has grown into an initiative that brings together a committed group of young people, all with the same purpose: to empower a community that faces social barriers and give them the support and visibility they deserve.

A Dream of Support and Unity

Pathway 21 was born from an urgent need and a deep sense of social responsibility. Francisco and Liz saw not only a lack of resources and safe spaces for people with Down syndrome and their families but also felt a call in their hearts to help. Inspired by the story of a single mother who fought for her son’s inclusion as he faced social rejection and educational barriers, Francisco decided to take action and create a space for real support. Pathway 21 has since become a communication channel and refuge where young leaders provide information, resources, recreational activities, and talks, seeking to connect families with specialists who can help them in their day-to-day lives.

The Inspiration Behind Their Commitment

For Francisco, the inspiration to help has roots in his own story. At the age of seven, he defended a friend with Down syndrome who was bullied, an experience that transformed his worldview. Later, he himself experienced bullying due to his physical appearance, motivating him to overcome his fears and create an inclusive space for those in need. Similarly, Liz found in Pathway 21 a means to make a difference, enthusiastically joining every step the club takes to expand its reach.

A Real Impact in the Community

Since its founding, Pathway 21 has impacted the lives of more than 150 people, including children and young people with conditions such as Down syndrome, autism, and microcephaly. The club’s fundraising campaigns send a clear message: each product they sell not only supports the cause but also inspires the community to join this path of transformation. “We have raised awareness in the Nicaraguan community about the importance of inclusion,” says Francisco, “and this is only the beginning.”

Pathway 21’s activities go beyond providing informational support; they also create a space where children and young people can explore their talents and build confidence in themselves. Talks and recreational activities aim to break down barriers, showing society that everyone has a place and that each person deserves to be valued and accepted.

A Mission Toward the Future

Francisco and Liz's dreams for Pathway 21 are as big as their dedication. They are determined to expand their project to reach Nicaragua’s most remote communities. With the goal of collaborating with at least 20 institutions that support children with Down syndrome, they aim to build strategic alliances and multiply the impact of their mission. “We want to share not only resources but also the love and joy of serving,” Liz explains.

Inspirados por la historia de una madre soltera que ha luchado por la inclusión de su hijo, quien enfrenta rechazo social y barreras en el sistema educativo, Francisco decidió tomar acción y fundar un espacio de apoyo real. Pathway 21 se ha convertido en un canal de comunicación y en un refugio donde los jóvenes líderes ofrecen información, recursos, actividades recreativas y charlas, y buscan conectar a las familias con especialistas que pueden ayudarlas en el día a día.

La Inspiración Detrás del Compromiso

Para Francisco, la inspiración de ayudar tiene raíces en su propia historia. A los siete años, defendió a un amigo con síndrome de Down que sufría bullying, una experiencia que transformó su visión del mundo. Más adelante, él mismo experimentó el impacto del acoso por su apariencia física, lo que lo motivó a superar sus miedos y a construir un espacio inclusivo para quienes lo necesitan. Liz, igualmente, ha encontrado en Pathway 21 un medio para hacer la diferencia, sumándose con entusiasmo a cada paso que el club da para expandir su alcance.

Un Impacto Real en la Comunidad

Desde su fundación, Pathway 21 ha logrado impactar la vida de más de 150 personas, entre ellas niños y jóvenes con condiciones como síndrome de Down, autismo y microcefalia. Las campañas de recaudación de fondos del club llevan un mensaje claro: cada producto que venden no solo apoya la causa, sino que inspira a la comunidad a unirse en este camino de transformación. “Hemos logrado sensibilizar a la comunidad nicaragüense sobre la importancia de la inclusión,” comenta Francisco, “y esto solo es el comienzo.”

Las actividades de Pathway 21 no solo se limitan a ofrecer apoyo informativo; también crean un espacio para que los niños y jóvenes exploren sus talentos y desarrollen confianza en sí mismos. Las charlas y actividades recreativas buscan romper barreras, mostrando a la sociedad que todos tienen un lugar en ella y que cada persona tiene el derecho de ser valorada y aceptada.
